Staying steadfast in rough seas
I don't need to tell you that life as we know it has been turned upside down in the last couple of months. Ever since we started hearing about Covid-19, families, businesses, organisations and nations have been thrown into a sea of uncertainty.
And the reality is that we don't like being in that place. It's not normal, it's not comfortable and it can be downright scary. It's the kind of rough seas that some friends of Jesus found themselves in while out in their boat and they were freaking out. Matthew 8:25 tells us "The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”"
Maybe you've felt that way recently, like you were going to drown? Not because you are in a boat, but rather you are venturing through some rough seas in life. Perhaps it is a recent medical diagnosis, maybe your financial circumstances have changed or even just the complexity of life during Covid-19 is getting you down.
If you are feeling that way, can I just encourage you that in amongst the uncertainly of life, in the midst of the storms, there is someone who is constant, someone is steadfast and who calms the storm. His name is Jesus, and in Matthew 8:26 he rebukes the wind and the waves and "suddenly there was a great calm."
Being a follower of Jesus does not mean we are immune to the challenges of life. It doesn't mean we won't face trials, in fact the bible makes it clear that we will. What following Jesus does do is bring peace into situations where there should be panic, it brings hope into moments that seem hopeless and it brings kingdom calm amongst earthly calamity.
So the next time you feel like you are slipping under the water, know that you are anchored to Jesus and He promises to keep you safe.
