Finishing 2020 Strong

It's probably an understatement to say that 2020 has been a tough year. In Australia we started with drought and bushfires and then around the globe we were hit with a global pandemic. Lives were lost, jobs were lost and for many people hope was lost as well.

But as we approach the end of this year, there are two ways we can make it to 2021. The first of those is limping to the finish line of 2020, dragging ourselves to December 31 completely out of breath and energy. Or, we could finish this year strongly, brushing aside the challenges and disappointments of this year and heading to the next with expectation.

We would be wise to take on board the encouragement of the writer of Hebrews, who in chapter 12 and verse 1 writes "So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life’s marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us."

Runners often have a moment during their race when they need to push through, when their body is aching to the point where they want to give up and quit. But they don't do that, because they know that is just an isolated moment, and that they need to persevere through that in order to keep running the race and to get to the end. Maybe we need to do that too? We need to push through this year and keep running the race that has already been marked out for us.

It's ok to think about 2020 as a shambles, as a write-off or just one of those years that you want to forget. There may be wounds, physical, emotional or mental, from the past few months, but don't let those stop you from running the race which God has set for you. Push through and finish this year strongly, with passion and determination, confident that what's next will take you another step closer to the finish line.
